Dental fear and oral health-related quality of life by mediating variable model(self-esteem & self-regulation)

Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between the dental fear, self-esteem, and self-regulation in oral health quality of life in the adolescents.

Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the 826 adolescents from March 5 to 16, 2012 in J city.

Results : Higher self-esteem(þá=0.186) was closely related to higher oral health-related quality of life(p<0.001). Dental fear had indirectly influenced on self-esteem and self-regulation, and had significant differences(p<0.05). The model showed that dental fear and oral health-related quality of life were a suitable structural model due to higher fit indices.

Conclusions : Self-esteem and self-regulation were the important variables to oral health-related quality of life. There was a close relationship between the dental fear and oral health-related quality of life.
